September 11: The falling man
Here’s something a little different in the wake of the anniversary of the Twin Tower collapses on September 11 2001.
Remember that photo that provoked so much outrage and an outpouring of shock and horror around the world that self-censorship in media was launched? After the initial print, the photo was never seen published again.
In the years following the attacks, much have happened, and time may have passed and moved on, but the horror of that day still remains fresh in many people’s lives, especially to native New Yorkers and families of victims who worked or may have been in that building at the time.
The falling man is now seen as the icon, or the face of people who decided to choose how they were going to die at a desperate moment with no way out. For some, it was an act of bravery, a last act of defiance, and for others, it was a betrayal of love, of trust and of hope.
Esquire wrote a fairly long article on the falling man, one of more than 200 people who decided to take their lives that day into their own hands by jumping to their deaths.
It is a lengthy read, but a deserving one.

Natural phenomena that you didn’t know about
ZmeScience has this article on a couple of interesting natural phenomena that might not be so common. Have you ever heard of rainbows at night, ablations in ice, perfectly round ice circles and raining fish? Well, do you know how they occur? I found a couple of interesting pictures at the site as well as a detailed explanation about each phenomena on how it came about.
The picture above is a moonbow, or a rainbow that forms at night
Here’s a picture of a water spout, a mini tornado that forms in the middle of the ocean.
This is what you would call a fire rainbow
A whirlpool in the middle of the ocean or a more scientific term,a maelstom.
Read all about these interesting phenomena and how they came to be at the site! They have a lot more other interesting articles of note such as this article, which tells you what the deadliest creature in the world is. Nope, not a great white, but a rather small little harmless looking thing.

Living Green: Design Sprout
Design Sprout is a website designed to guide readers to conform to a new way of living. 1sitedaily has seen and promoted a number of eco-friendly websites in the past. What can I say-we are doing our bit to save our planet, in bytes
What I really like about this site is that it provides everyday solutions to how to make your lives a little bit greener- recyling Fedex boxes to create wine racks, recycling your yoga mat into placemats and holiday ornaments… just simple everyday stuff that you and I can both easily do.
But what I really like about the site is that they provide new novel ideas and concepts to greening up your home. Take a look at this “PlantBot” for instance. The robot automatically seeks sunlight and moves to that spot so you won’t ever have the inconvenience of moving the pot yourself. So convenient and ultra cool!
Other notable entries include an ecosensible water pitcher,
and this flow kitchen which is very sustainable. (This is one of my favourites!). According to DesignSprout, this kitchen design is self-sustainable. The washed dishes help to water the edible herbs which then prosper, and help to nurture a dust-free environment. A win-win situation.

Annie Leibovitz: Amazing photographer.
I’m sure many of you have heard of Annie Leibovitz by now, especially through her Disney Dream Portrait series featuring celebrities portraying fairy tale characters such as Snow White and Cinderella.
Here’s David Beckham as Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty
And here is Julie Andrews as the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio and Abigial Breslin as Fira from Disney Fairies.
Then there were the more controversial photos of a very young Miley Cyrus (barely 15) posing topless for the cover of Vanity Fair.
She also famously shot John Lennon’s last picture for Rolling Stone before his untimely death in 1980.
However, her less famous works aren’t any less of an impact, which is why I feel that they do deserve some more attention, perhaps even more so than her more commercial photographs.
In one of her photography books simply called, “Women,” Leibovitz has managed to essentially capture the spirit and emotion of different women across the country. This picture of a young soldier girl that stuck in my mind; she was sitting down in the middle of autumn, geared head to toe in military armour and a gun in her lap, looking straight into the camera. What sort of emotions come to mind when one sees such a photo?
Other images include a drag car racer, a baseball pitcher and a performance artist. Not your everyday female gender roles, and that is why they are so inspiring.
Visit the photography site at Women@The New York Times Daily where you can view most of the photographs in the book and listen to the interview where Leibovitz talked about how the project came about.
Suddenly I See
Another site which i personally find it interesting. This is another site which you might not see everyday. What does this site do? Simple, it shows you before and after an image has been make over. Basically, it is a retouching center. What so interesting? See for yourself how long have you been deceived by the entertainment industry. That’s interesting. Let me gives you some example,
Whitening product is good when you see this,

But guess again.

If you are thinking of getting a new butter from the market that you saw from this advertisement,
Better think twice.
Saw that hot chick in the magazine staring at you?
Where?
