Gukanjima Island: Illegal visit
The focus of this post is the Gukanjima ghost island coal mine city in Japan. There’s something about ghost towns that are just so eerie, and beautiful amidst the disaster and debris. It fits everything a ghost city should have: rusty hinges, peeling paint, crumbling walls and broken chairs and no person in sight.
Gukanjima used to be a coal mine city from 1887 until 1974 until the decline of the industry that caused it to shut down. The inhabitants fled to the mainland abandoning the city. Viceland launched an illegal visit to the island which warranted a 30 days stay in prison if caught and managed to capture the labyrinths of the city in all its crumbling glory.
Other sites such as The BLDGBLOG and DirJournal have a mention and contain photos of the island but none so indepth as Viceland. However, the BLDGBLOG is worth a visit due to its architectural theme.
