NotCouture

notcouture NotCouture

We’ve seen sites like this before – from Tastespotting to FoodGawker. All three sites have the same concept- using visual representation. And boy, does it work.

NotCouture is just like Tastespotting, showcasing gorgeous pictures that links to the original site, only that it shows clothes instead of food.

Here are some of my favourite picks from the site. All images were taken from the site.

pretty dress NotCouture

I loved this dramatic piece from Imaginary People even though I probably wouldn’t be able to fit into it properly. I also love the posture of this model, it’s as if she stopped in mid-dance.

bag NotCouture

And this Antoine bag by Jerome Dreyfuss is just too gorgeous with the suede light gray fabric.

quirky sandals NotCouture

This pair of sandals might split the audience into two- either you’ll hate them or love them since it is kind of weird ugly, but it is just SO QUIRKY! Sandals by Jil Sander

and these oxford lace up heels are so understatedly sexy and elegant, a far cry from the many punked up oxfords that are in the market nowadays.

origami necklace NotCouture

And how genius is this origami necklace !? Made entirely from fine silver *_*

gorgeous samantha treacy NotCouture

Towards something more wearable, i love the dreamy colours of this samantha treacy dress, and the billowy soft material.

navy novella NotCouture

I loved this classic and simple blue navy shift dress

marc jacobs sasha bag NotCouture

This bag by Marc for Marc Jacobs brings out the edgy rocker in you.

shift dress NotCouture

i think this dress is classy and simple

juicy couture flats NotCouture

i love tie up shoes, and these ballet flats are too pretty and delicate to resist.

runaway fox NotCouture

Last but not least, this Runaway Fox bag by Tylie Malibu.

Philip Toledo’s Phone Sex

November8

I love unconventional stories, and this one made me smile.

Phone sex is a photographical narrative  by the same Philip Toledo who portrayed powerful thought-provoking images of the last days with his father, who now captures a side of phone sex operators whom we have never seen before.

Please view the pictures and hear their stories at his site, Phone sex

Taxi Diary

November7

You know, our parents used to feed us with success stories about doing our best in schools academically, work our way through university and graduate with a piece of paper that would guarantee our success in life.

But what happens if that great dream isn’t as grand as it seems to be?

What if it is all just an illusion?

A mere piece of paper; is that really all it takes to be successful in a career, in life?

Here is one man’s journey of a dream turned to ashes, of a career crumbled to dust, of his PHD status ripped to shreds. For he is now a mere taxi driver in the midst of busy cosmopolitan Singapore, earning a living off ferrying people on the streets.

Dr. Cai used to be a prominent scientist, one credited with discovering fluorescent green protein (GFP), an important milestone in the field of genetics where GFP is commonly used as a molecular marker to tag genes or proteins so that they become visually identifiable. He had since lost his job, and driven to desperation, decided to trade career hats to become a taxi driver.

It isn’t any less noble, what the man is doing. Showing a knack for writing and crafting an interesting sociological point of view of Singapore’s more affluent society, and the lesser ventured backlanes and alleys, Dr. Cai shows us a side of Singapore some of us have rarely seen before.

Visit Taxi Diary for enchanting tales narrated by Dr. Cai, the taxi driver with a PHD.

If pot was legal…

September29

This is probably not very politically correct, and even illegal but I couldn’t help but marvel at the possibility of a legal pot-smoking nation, and  how would they market the product.

Marijuana have been labelled the world’s “safest illegal drug” as overdosing rarely, if never, happens. The effects are temporary and to consume a lethal dose of pot, you’d have to consume at least one third of your body weight.

Fast Company displayed a few package designs for the marketing purposes of the drug to answer a hypothetical question: :If weed was made legal, how would you market it?”

weed If pot was legal…

This I thought looked very appealing, very minimalist a la Apple’s iPod designs.

weed2 If pot was legal…

I thought this looked rather tacky, but I can see how some people would equate the colours with the drug

weed3 If pot was legal…

And this picture looked more like condom packs to me than anything else!

Make My Mood

What if, instead of licking ice cream, ice cream licked us?

Make My Mood has a lot of strange, surreal pictures, and more.

The Home page leads to just a random picture that could be anything: pictures depicting life’s anecdotes, joy, sadness, the surreal and the bizarre.

It’s quite an interesting concept, for those bored, and looking to be highly amused.

September 11: The falling man

September15

Here’s something a little different in the wake of the anniversary of the Twin Tower collapses on September 11 2001.

Remember that photo that provoked so much outrage and an outpouring of shock and horror around the world that self-censorship in media was launched? After the initial print, the photo was never seen published again.

fallingman lg September 11: The falling man

In the years following the attacks, much have happened, and time may have passed and moved on, but the horror of that day still remains fresh in many people’s lives, especially to native New Yorkers and families of victims who worked or may have been in that building at the time.

The falling man is now seen as the icon, or the face of people who decided to choose how they were going to die at a desperate moment with no way out. For some, it was an act of bravery, a last act of defiance, and for others, it was a betrayal of love, of trust and of hope.

Esquire wrote a fairly long article on the falling man, one of more than 200 people who decided to take their lives that day into their own hands by jumping to their deaths.

It is a lengthy read, but a deserving one.

Rob Sheridan: Sketchblog

sketchBlog 1251479418767 Rob Sheridan: Sketchblog

I’ve blogged about Rob Sheridan’s photographs before, today I’m going to blog about his SketchBlog

Rob’s sketchblog is another side hobby, to publish his creative illustrations and art, besides showing the more personal side of him not seen on his professional portfolio.

shoutingmatch sm Rob Sheridan: Sketchblog scaretactics sm Rob Sheridan: Sketchblog

cerealmascotreunion sm Rob Sheridan: Sketchblog

As you can  see, Rob’s illustrations veer towards the kitschy, weird and a strange affinity to monsters.

Definitely not your everyday cuddly animals.

They are worth a look at though, monsters they may be, they still are darned cool-looking ones.

I wish I had that kind of talent.
